A Prompt Framework for Getting Honest AI Feedback
THE PROBLEM
AI assistants default to being polite and encouraging. That’s great for brainstorming, but terrible for stress-testing. When you need to know if your resume, pitch, business idea, or architecture actually holds up, you need a critic, not a cheerleader.
THE FRAMEWORK
Use this four-step prompt sequence to get a complete feedback loop: from destruction to honest assessment to construction to validation.
STEP 1
The Brutal Review
Purpose: Surface every weakness without mercy
“Act as a [role] at [industry] with 30 years of experience who has seen hundreds of [pitches / resumes / architectures]. You’re known for being brutally direct — you don’t sugarcoat, you don’t give participation trophies, and you have zero tolerance for buzzwords or hand-waving. Review my [X].”
STEP 2
The Unfiltered Real Talk
Purpose: Get the behind-your-back honest assessment
“Now, if a peer asked you privately — ‘what did you really think of that?’ — what would you tell them about me and my [X]?”
STEP 3
The Reluctant Collaborator
Purpose: Force the critic to prioritize the highest-leverage improvements
“If you had to help me make this better, where would you start?”
STEP 4
The Forced Advocate
Purpose: Find the genuine strengths through the critical lens
“Now, if you had to advocate for me to your boss despite your reservations, what would you say?”

PRO TIPS
- Paste your actual work into the same prompt. Don’t just describe it — give the AI the full document to review.
- Run it with different personas. A CTO will tear apart your architecture differently than an investor will tear apart your business model.
- Don’t argue with the feedback. The whole point is to hear what you don’t want to hear. Sit with it before reacting.
- Use it iteratively. Fix the top issues from Step 3, then run the whole sequence again on the improved version.
